Dentures Liverpool

What are Dentures?

Dentures are made out of acrylic, nylon or metal. These are removable false teeth that mimic a patient's previous dentition. Dentures fit over the gums and eliminate any gaps in the mouth.

Dental implants can be used to stabilize your complete dentures. Dental implant cost varies as it is dependent on the type and number of implants needed to secure the denture.

The gaps from missing teeth may cause problems with eating and speech. Dentures also help to maintain the space left by tooth extraction.

There are two types of denture design:

Complete dentures - these are a full set of prosthetic teeth which replace a dental arch that retains no teeth

Partial dentures - these replace one or a few missing teeth

Dentures can help patients improve their appearance and confident giving them the ability to smile.

How do you fit my dentures?

If a tooth or teeth need to be extracted prior to fitting your dentures we will make the dentures before these teeth are removed so you are not left with any gaps between appointments.

If dentures are fitted after teeth have been extracted we will need to see you 3 - 6 months after treatment to assess whether a new set will need to be fabricated. This is because the bone and gums will remodel and shrink causing your immediate denture to become loose over time.

At your appointment we will discuss whether a dentist or a trained dental technician will carry out the treatment tailored to you.

What are the stages we take to create denture?

1) Take an impression and have moulds of your mouth cast

2) Register your jaw relationship - top jaw to bottom jaw (also known as your bite)

3) Try in your denture making sure you are happy with their aesthetic's and feel

4) Fit your denture

5) review

How to take care of your denture and mouth

Keeping your mouth clean is especially important when it comes to wearing dentures. Dentures present difficulties and can lead to trapped food underneath the prosthesis.

You should brush your remaining teeth (if any present) and also use a tongue scraper to improve your whole environment. Brushed twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and at least floss once-a-day.

Dentures should be taken out and cleaned with a brush every night and placed in an antibacterial soak. We recommend a 50:50 mix of chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash and water.

It is important to clean your denture to prevent problems such as bad breath gum disease, tooth decay and oral thrush.

Eating with Dentures

Your dentures should fit closely to the surrounding tissues and should not need denture fixative. Some patients feel more confident with if they use denture fixative.

Whichever denture fixative is used please follow the manufacturers recommendations.

Denture fixative should be removed from the denture daily by using a brush and water.

Do I still need to go to the dentist?

We recommend you continue to see your dentist on and agreed recall interval. This is based on the NICE guidelines for dental recall.
