You should not ignore severe tooth pain. It signals that something is seriously wrong. You may need an urgent root canal if you have intense, persistent toothache that disrupts sleep, or pain that throbs and radiates to your jaw or ear. Other warning signs include extreme sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that lasts more than a few seconds, swelling in the gums near the painful tooth, or a small pimple-like bump on your gum (an abscess). Your same-day emergency appointment focuses on getting you out of pain. We start with about 30 minutes of initial assessment, including a 3D CBCT scan to view the tooth’s root structure and infection. If a root canal is required, we numb the area with strong local anaesthetic. The procedure, performed by Dr. Ashok Reddy who holds an MSc in Endodontics, takes about 60 to 90 minutes. He accesses the inside of the tooth, removes infected nerve tissue, and cleans the root canals. An antibiotic paste is placed inside, and a temporary filling is applied. A second appointment will be needed later to finish the treatment and place a permanent restoration. The typical success rate for this procedure is 85 to 95 percent.

It is essential to return for your follow-up appointment to finish the treatment and permanently seal the tooth, as a temporary filling is not a long-term solution. When the nerve is infected you have two main options: save the tooth with a root canal or remove it with an extraction. We aim to save natural teeth whenever possible. A root canal preserves the tooth, keeps your bite intact, and reduces bone loss that can occur after extraction. An extraction is often quicker and cheaper at first, but you must consider the cost of replacing the tooth with an implant or a bridge to prevent shifting of other teeth. If the tooth is too damaged to save, extraction is a valid option. We focus on saving teeth that others might deem unsalvageable.
