General dentists handle routine root canals. They refer you when your tooth needs advanced technology or details. You are sent to our Finchley practice if the tooth has complex anatomy like narrow or curved canals. Re treatment of a failed canal is another reason. The referral process keeps you and your dentist informed. Your dentist sends referral details and any x rays. We contact you to arrange a consultation lasting about 45 to 60 minutes. In this visit we assess the tooth, may take a 3D CBCT scan for a detailed view, discuss the procedure and costs, and answer questions. The treatment usually takes one appointment of 60 to 90 minutes under local anaesthetic. You will be numb and comfortable. Afterward we send a full report to your dentist. You then return to them for the final restoration, such as a crown or filling, typically 2 to 4 weeks later.

After the procedure you may have some tenderness in the area for a few days as the anaesthetic wears off. This is normally mild and can be managed with common pain relievers. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is placed by your dentist. The tooth may feel different for a while but this passes. Maintain good oral hygiene with gentle brushing and flossing. Call us during office hours if you have severe pain not eased by medicine, swelling, or an allergic reaction. For emergencies outside hours go to A&E or call 111.

If the tooth is too damaged to save, the main alternative is extraction. Extraction removes the tooth and can cause longer term issues. The gap may allow adjacent teeth to shift and affect your bite or jaw. Replacing the tooth with an implant or a bridge is the longer term solution but involves more procedures and higher costs than saving the tooth. In most cases keeping your natural tooth through root canal treatment is best for overall dental health.
