Emergency Root Canal Treatment for North Finchley Patients

Intense tooth pain usually signals an infection or abscess that requires urgent care. Call us for a same-day emergency appointment if you have any of the following: severe, persistent, throbbing toothache that disrupts sleep; pain that worsens when you lie down; a pimple-like bump on the gum; swelling around the jaw or cheek; or extreme sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts. The main goal of the visit is fast pain relief. We start with a digital X-ray or a 3D CBCT scan to diagnose the problem, about 15 minutes. Dr. Reddy will numb the area with local anaesthetic so you feel no pain during the procedure. He will access the inside of the tooth to relieve the pressure from the infection, which provides immediate relief. The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and disinfected. An antimicrobial medication might be placed inside the tooth and sealed with a temporary filling. This initial visit lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. You will return for a follow-up to finish filling and sealing the canals permanently.

After the anaesthetic wears off, expect tenderness and mild discomfort as you heal. This is usually managed with over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen. Your jaw may feel sore from the procedure. Stick to soft foods for a couple of days and avoid chewing on the treated tooth. You can brush and floss normally but be gentle around the temporary filling. For a recent patient with an acute abscess, we prescribed a short course of antibiotics to clear the remaining infection and advised a cold compress on the cheek for 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.

Complications are rare, but know what to watch for. Call our practice during office hours Mon/Wed/Fri 9 AM-5 PM, Tue/Thu 11 AM-7 PM if you experience: severe pain not relieved by medication, visible swelling inside or outside the mouth that grows, an allergic reaction to medication, or if the temporary filling comes out. In an emergency with a severely infected tooth, the main alternative is tooth extraction. Removing the tooth eliminates infection and pain but is usually a last resort because we aim to save natural teeth whenever possible. An extraction creates a gap that can cause other teeth to shift, affect your bite, and lead to bone loss. Replacing the missing tooth later with an implant or bridge involves more procedures and cost. We discuss the pros and cons with you, but in most cases saving the tooth with root canal treatment is the best long-term option.
